Aromatic herbs come in a wide variety of flavors and uses. They can be employed in cooking and some are even known to be effective in keeping away mosquitoes. Here’s more in today’s Close Up.

A wave of purple comes into sight. The field is covered with lavender, which some call the queen of herbs. Fully blossomed lavender can be seen during the month of June.

[Soundbite] Kim Ga-hyang(Yonsan-gu District, Seoul) : "It's not easy to spot a lavender field in Korea. I'm happy to be here with my child."

Known for their velvet flowers, lavender is a type of herb. Herbs are aromatic plants that can be used in cooking or medicine. In fact, in Korea, around 1,000 different herbs are grown. Their use is as wide as their numerous varieties. First let's see how their used in cooking. Just a little bit of herbs can elevate regular homemade rice to a new level.

[Soundbite] Jeon Hye-in(Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do Prov. Resident) : "This is herb oil. You make a bottle and it goes a long way in various dishes."

In making herb oil particularly for fish, use those with a stronger scent to keep down the fishy smell. All you do is mix a spoonful each of olive oil and dried herbs.

[Soundbite] Jeon Hye-in(Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do Prov. Resident) : "It's better to keep herb oil in room temperature for about a week before using. The maturing period develops the flavor."

Now marinate the fish with a generous amount of matured herb oil for about 30 minutes. The finished grilled fish dish will be amazing. Growing just a couple of herbs at home can come in handy in all sorts of cooking. Basil is a perfect match with tomatoes and is commonly found in Italian cuisine. A touch of basil in spaghetti makes a world of difference in taste. Mint, with its refreshing flavor, frozen with water, creates herbal mint ice. You can whip up a cool drink using carbonated water, some lemon and lime and the frozen mint. As you see here, prepare a meal filled with splashes of various herbs.

There are more ways to make use of aromatic herbs.

All you need is plant-based ethanol and a couple of herb oils. They can all be purchased online. First add lemon grass and citronella oils to the plant-based ethanol. This is because mosquitoes particularly hate the citrus scent. Then lavender oil goes in which works as an insecticide and plays another important role.

[Soundbite] Lee Mi-ye(Workshop owner) : "Lavender oil has synergetic properties to facilitate the effects of other fragrance oils."

Mix in some natural moisturizer and purified water and you have a homemade mosquito repellent. Spend a cool, refreshing summer, making good use of versatile herbs.
