Kim Gun-ja smiles brightly in her funeral portrait, deepening the sorrow for those left behind. She left this world around 8 o'clock Sunday morning at age 91.

[Soundbite] Lee Yong-su(Japanese Army's Sex Slavery Victim) : "Fly to heaven where there's no pain. Be happy wherever you are."

Born in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do Province, she was only 16 when she was taken to a sex slave camp in China's Jilin Province. The following three years were life in hell itself. She attempted suicide seven times and tried to escape just as many times, but every time she was punished with violent assault from Japanese soldiers. As a result, she lost her hearing in the left ear. Nonethless, she told the international community about her harrowing experiences and the atrocities committed by the Japanese military.

[Soundbite] The Late Kim Gun-ja(Feb. 2007) : "I tried to kill myself but couldn't. I was discovered by my master and was almost killed."

She was the most vocal opponent of the so-called "comfort women" deal signed between Korea and Japan.

[Soundbite] The Late Kim Gun-ja(Dec. 2015) : "We are the victims. How could the government make such an agreement? We can't accept it."

Her only wishes were an official apology from the Japanese government and rightful compensation. Once she got the compensation, she intended to donate the money to the needy. 239 Korean victims of Japan's sex slavery are registered with the government. With Kim's passing, the number of surviving victims dropped to only 37.
