On Saturday, the U.S. made a show of force flying U.S. strategic bombers over the Korean Peninsula. For the first time since the Korean Armistice Agreement, U.S. aircraft flew all the way to the international zone in the East Sea near North Korea to send a warning to Pyongyang. Interestingly, the U.S. bombers were not escorted by South Korea's Air Force or Japanese fighter jets. Let's find out why.

B-1B Lancer bombers are always the first to appear in the skies over the Korean Peninsula when North Korea launches nuclear or missile provocations. Boasting a maximum speed of Mach 1.2, these bombers are faster than the B-52 or B-2 models, and can reach Korea from Guam in just two hours. They can be loaded with a total of 61 tons of explosives -- 34 tons on the inside and 27 tons on the outside. The bombers can also fire with utter precision the GBU-31 and GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions as well as long-range joint air-to-surface standoff missiles from hundreds of kilometers away. In times of war, they can also deploy the GBU-43, known as the "Mother of all bombs," and the GBU-57, which can penetrate targets located 60 meters underground. Moreover, the bombers can be loaded with hundreds of conventional bombs, like the MK-84 and MK-82, which are enough to destroy the North's military command, underground bunkers, and nuclear and missile bases. What is especially noteworthy is that the B-1B Lancer bombers flew close to North Korea on their own at night without being escorted by South Korean or Japanese jets.

[Soundbite] Shin Jong-woo(Korea Defense & Security Forum) : "The goal was to demonstrate that the United States is capable of striking North Korea on its own and that it will not give in to N. Korea's threats."

The Presidential Office said that the U.S. forces had notified them of the flight in advance and the operation was carried out through close collaboration between South Korea and the United States. Meanwhile, President Moon Jae-in presided over a national security meeting and instructed his administration to find ways to deter North Korea's additional provocations.
