Oyster harvesting is in full swing on the south coast of Korea, where 70 percent of the nation’s oysters are produced. Let's take a look.

Hallyeohaesang National Park, known for its pristine environment, is home to myriad oyster farms. The ropes are full of large clusters of oysters that have grown well over the past one and a half years. They are big and fleshy. Workers are busy shucking oysters. As soon as nets full of oysters arrive, they begin to skillfully separate the flesh from the shell.

[Soundbite] Jeon Dul-ik (Worker) : "Oysters produced in Tongyeong are highly recognized. I feel good now."

The first oyster auction of the year has opened on the south coast. After a slump caused by a norovirus outbreak early this year, fishermen on the south coast of the nation finally see a ray of hope. Demand for oysters is expected to rise further when the kimchi-making season begins next month.

[Soundbite] Choi Jung-bok (Fisheries Cooperative Official) : "The fishermen are full of hope. They look forward to a more profitable year compared with last year."

About 40,000 tons of oysters are produced annually on the south coast of Korea. Oyster harvesting will continue through next spring.
