Last month, the number of people who landed new jobs in Korea reached 300,000. But few young people feel the positive effect, as businesses that people in their 20s want to work for are not hiring much these days. Although the overall number of newly employed people has surged, the job market remains jittery.

This neighborhood in Noryangjin, Seoul, where many private tutoring academies are located, is crowded with people preparing to take civil service exams.

[Soundbite] Kim Jin-hee(Aspiring Police Officer) : "None of my acquaintances have landed jobs recently. Most of them are preparing to take civil service exams regardless of their college majors."

They all want to land jobs as soon as possible, but the competition only keeps intensifying.

[Soundbite] (Aspiring Teacher) : "I have lived here for two years. More and more people are moving to this neighborhood. Many people I know are preparing to take civil service exams these days."

[Soundbite] (Aspiring Public Servant) : "It's more fierce now. It's quite unsettling for me to see so many people join my tutoring school."

Last month, the number of young unemployed people surged again, recording a two-year high. What's more, the number of so-called "discouraged workers," or people who are not looking for jobs despite the absence of health problems or disabilities, also soared.

[Soundbite] Bin Hyun-jun(Statistics Korea) : "The numbers of job-seekers and discouraged workers keep growing, because the situation in the job market remains unfavorable to young people."

Meanwhile, the overall number of newly employed people surged by 314,000. The increase was notable in the construction sector because of the favorable weather, and the public sector, which has benefited from the execution of the supplementary government budget. However, the situation remains gloomy in the lodging, dining and manufacturing sectors. Low hiring by small businesses and the rising number of daily laborers also point to the existence of risk factors, such as trade issues and stagnation in the construction sector.
