A Seoul court has denied the prosecution an arrest warrant for Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Yang-ho. The investigation into the executive family of Korean Air has hit yet another snag, as the court has refused to grant arrest warrants for anyone in the family so far.

A court has dismissed the request for an arrest warrant for Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Yang-ho. Cho, who had been awaiting the results of the arrest warrant hearing, returned home shortly after the court's decision had been announced.

[Soundbite] Cho Yang-ho (Chairman, Hanjin Group): “(How does it feel to have your arrest warrant rejected?) (What do you think about the allegations regarding a fake subsidiary?) …….”

The Seoul Nambu District Court said the charges against Cho Yang-ho were disputable and his right to self-defense needed to be guaranteed. Prosecutors had sought an arrest warrant for the head of Hanjin Group on the charges of embezzlement, breach of trust and fraud. Cho Yang-ho is being accused of misappropriating over one hundred billion won by running an illegal pharmacy near Inha University Hospital. He is also charged with receiving transit duty from the suppliers of in-flight duty-free goods and incurring billions of won in losses to Hanjin Group's subsidiary JungSeok Enterprise by buying its shares cheap and re-selling them for a higher price to obtain profits for his three children. With the arrest warrants for Cho Yang-ho, his wife and younger daughter having been dismissed, the investigation into Hanjin Group will inevitably hit snags.
