The Korea Meteorological Administration said the season's first snow was reported last night near the peak of Seoraksan Mountain in Gangwondo Province. But a snowfall has not been recorded due to the minuscule amount. The first snow at Seorak comes 17 days later than last year. Snow has also been detected at Taebaeksan and Gwangdeoksan mountains. The mercury at Seoraksan at one time plunged to minus 7.8 degrees Celsius overnight.
The Oceans and Fisheries Ministry has announced the Cabinet approved a revised enforcement ordinance that newly introduces a closed season for fishing common octopus, also known as octopus vulgaris, aimed at protecting the marine species. The ban lasts from May 16 and June 30 every year. Catch of the common octopus exceeded ten-thousand tons up to 2009 but since plunged to 68-hundred tons in 2011 and the decline continues.
