Have you heard about flights that have no destinations? The program was developed for those who want to get a taste of a trip, when they can't go overseas due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Next, we will take you on a flight that traveled over the Korean Peninsula. Passengers wearing masks board an Airbus A380, which is the largest passenger jet today. On a round trip, it takes off at Incheon Airport, flies over Gangneung and Jejudo Island before returning.
[Soundbite] JANG DOO-HO(CAPTAIN) : "This short flight was planned to refresh and reinvigorate people who are fatigued by the pandemic."
[Soundbite] "One, two, three."
Passengers take photos to capture the memories of the flight with no destination.
[Soundbite] CHO HYANG-MI(DAEGU RESIDENT) : "We are from Daegu. For a week before we left, she was so excited that she couldn't sleep well and kept asking me everyday when we would leave. (You mean your daughter?) Yes, right."
In-flight meals which are not served on domestic flights, taste extra-special in this COVID-19 era. It's time to determine the winner of the top prize, a free flight ticket.
[Soundbite] "Who is going to win this flight ticket?"
The excitement is short-lived, due to the ongoing pandemic.
[Soundbite] LEE DAE-YEON(PRIZE WINNER) : "I really want to travel of course. My whole family wants to go on a trip. But now, we can't. I am not sure when I will be able to use this ticket."
As the plane lowers its altitude to circle around Hallasan Mountain, passengers can enjoy up close, the picturesque scenes of Baekrokdam Lake.
[Soundbite] "Wow, it's amazing!"
After making its last flight in late March, the A380 was parked on the runway, paying three million won in usage fees a day. The only time it took off was when pilots flew it with no passengers aboard in order to maintain their licenses.
[Soundbite] LEE HYE-RIN(FLIGHT ATTENDANT) : "I was both glad and sad to see passengers who were excited about taking a flight for the first time in a long while."
Similar flights run by low-cost carriers are enjoying growing popularity among those missing the pre-COVID-19 days of traveling freely. More airline companies seem set to launch such programs to make use of their grounded planes.
