The Internet of Things, connecting devices, buildings and vehicles over the web, is penetrating various areas of our daily lives. In fact, network optimized for IoT services are going into nationwide operation in Korea to facilitate the latest innovations.

A smartphone app shows an empty parking spot nearby. Users share their private parking spaces with others for a fee. But costly phone charges have been an obstacle to this parking space sharing program.

[Soundbite] Park Tae-rim(CEO, Ino-on) : "We were using the same 3G network technology as mobile phones. This required users to pay considerably high fees and consumed a lot of battery power."

Now a network optimized for IoT services has gone into nationwide operation. Data fees will be slashed to as much as one-tenth the cost of using conventional mobile communication networks. Power consumption is also much lower, so a device can be used for many years without replacing the sensor.

[Soundbite] Cha In-hyeok(IoT Business, SK Telecom) : "A world will be created in which many objects are connected at a very low price and innovative services are provided."

The government has also boosted the output standards of the 900-megahertz band for IoT services by a factor of 20 in order to enable IoT communication with only a few relay bases. With the launch of the IoT-exclusive network, novel ideas based on IoT technology are expected to give rise to innovative new businesses.
