New study results show that traditional Korean cuisine mainly consisting of fermented sauces, kimchi and vegetables lowers the risks of colon cancer by more than 60 percent. Let's take a look.

These are traditional Korean dishes made with various mushrooms and vegetables, and seasoned with fermented soybean sauce. In analysis of the correlation between dietary habits and colon cancer, a research team at the National Cancer Center has found that more intake of traditional Korean foods lowers the risks of colon cancer by more than 60 percent. The researchers explained that the traditional menu of vegetables and fermented bean sauces helps prevent cancer.

[Soundbite] Kim Jeong-seon(Official, National Cancer Center) : "Bioactive substances contained in these foods, such as vitamins and minerals, play a crucial role in preventing colon cancer and other types of cancer."

By contrast, the risks of colon cancer are over two times higher for people who favor fast food or Western dishes. Experts advise that while it is necessary to change dietary habits in order to prevent colon cancer, one must also partake in sufficient exercise and have regular medical checkups.
