The European Union has strongly suggested that it will soon impose additional sanctions on North Korea. In a foreign affairs council meeting held in Brussels, the EU issued a statement showing its willingness to expand sanctions on the North. In the statement, the EU harshly criticized Pyongyang for threatening world peace and security and damaging non-proliferation and disarmament systems with ongoing nuclear tests and missile launches. It also said that North Korea's nuclear and missile activities are in violation of international obligations stipulated in UN Security Council resolutions. The EU stressed that tensions are escalating on the Korean Peninsula due to the North's irresponsible and illicit acts. While welcoming the UN Security Council's new tougher Resolution 2321, it urged North Korea to return to the six-party nuclear talks and stop provocations. The EU said that it is considering new sanctions against the regime, reiterating that it will fulfill its commitments to help with the denuclearization of the peninsula.
