Island residents in Korea had a hard time traveling around their island, since mass transportation like buses or taxis were non-existent in remote villages. But now there is a minibus that takes islanders everywhere for only 100 won per ride.

Daeijak-do Island can be reached in about an hour by boat from Incheon Port. The island has 18 kilometers of beautiful grassy sandbanks and four beaches, but no mass transportation. 80-year-old Jeong Geum-ja doesn't own a car, so she had to walk up and down a hill for decades to travel between the dock and her village, six kilometers away. Now residents like her can take the "village bus." This minibus operates for eight hours every day. Residents can call for this bus service, which takes them anywhere on the island for only 100 won. The city of Incheon and Ongjin-gun County introduced two such buses on a trial basis and now have decided to provide the service in other islands.
[Soundbite] Heo Jong-sik(Deputy Mayor of Incheon) : "Many islands have aging populations. We plan to expand the minibus service to other islands."
Between 60 and 70 percent of the island residents are 60 or older, but transportation services have been lacking in the island. Now this small bus is making their lives much easier.
