What would you do if someone needed emergency assistance right in front of you? While some of us might naturally freeze or even turn a blind eye, today we seek inspiration by celebrating the courage of citizens who take action.

This man seated in a restaurant waiting for food suddenly goes unconscious and collapses.

[Soundbite] Kim Jin-ok(Witness, Restaurant Owner) : "He collapsed and I was so surprised. It was an urgent situation."

Two other men eating nearby move the man to the floor and begin to conduct CPR. It took about ten minutes for the 119 rescue squad to arrive. The patient's heart began to thump again thanks to the continued CPR while waiting for medical staff.

[Soundbite] Kim Deok-soo(Citizen who Rescued Unconscious Patient) : "I was physically worn out but I continued CPR with the determination to save the man's life."

Smoke and blaze fill up a parking lot at a funeral hall. The vehicle caught up in flames can explode at any moment. It's a dangerous situation. A man wearing an armband indicating he's a chief mourner approaches the scene with little hesitation and begins to put out the fire with an extinguisher. The brave citizen was an active duty soldier whose grandmother had just passed.

[Soundbite] Jo Geon-sik(Army, Sergeant First Class) : "Cars were packed in the parking lot. If the flame spread to other vehicles, I thought it could trigger a chain explosion. That's why I responded right away."

Courageous citizens come to the rescue for people in need during crisis. They are the hope of a better society where everyone lives together.
