Yesterday, September 7th, was Social Welfare Day in Korea. To mark this meaningful day, an orchestra comprised of both disabled and non-disabled members held its first concert.
[Pkg]
A majestic melody echoes around the hall. Each instrument maintains its unique sound. None of the sounds are overpowered or stick out. The musicians come together as one in body and mind. This orchestra member who has had a developmental disability since a young age says she is the happiest when playing on the stage.
[Soundbite] Kang Song-gang(Member, Seocho Hanwoori Wind Orchestra) : "It's nice to play the flute together. It was really nice. The flute makes pretty sounds."
The orchestra is composed of 15 members with developmental disabilities and 5 ordinary members. It was founded in the hope that they would overcome their disabilities and shatter social biases with music.
[Soundbite] Lee Hyeon-ju(Music Director, Seocho Hanwoori Wind Orchestra) : "Non-disabled members are not walking ahead. We are walking together toward the same dream and goal."
Although it took a long time for the orchestra to form, family members are comforted by the fact that they can provide support for their loved ones.
[Soundbite] Kim Myeong-hwa(Kang Song-gang's Mother) : "When my daughter did what she wanted to do, her dreams came true. Good things will happen along the way. It's like getting a present on the way."
The Seocho Hanwoori Wind Orchestra is invited to a concert in preparation for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics to present a heart-warming performance.
