The Korea Sale Festa, the largest shopping and tourism festival in the country, will kick off next week ahead of the Chuseok Korean thanksgiving holiday. This year, more businesses are taking part with more abundant sale events.

This is the shopping district of Myeongdong in downtown Seoul, just ten days ahead of the Chuseok thanksgiving holiday. A number of stores are offering major discounts but the streets are not very crowded. This is due to the notable absence of Chinese tourists. The Korea Sale Festa begins next week, aimed at boosting the sluggish tourism and shopping sentiment ahead of the Chuseok holiday.

[Soundbite] Paik Un-gyu(Minister of Trade, Industry & Energy) : "This year's Festa will be an interactive event filled with good buys, good eats and attractions."

Participation is larger this year with some 400 firms taking part in various sectors of distribution, manufacturing, entertainment, accommodations and dining. Particularly this year, around 500 traditional markets are also attending the Sale Festa as part of efforts to strengthen ties between large and small entities. Department stores will also host special sales of quality products made by medium and small sized companies. Some 230 direct trading markets will also open especially for the Chuseok holiday. Discount events will also take place for agricultural and livestock produce and traditional food items. A range of festivities will also be held on the sidelines of the Sale Festa event. This includes 55 regional festivals and cultural festivals taking place at traditional markets as well as special menu items offered at bargain prices at major Korean food restaurants in Seoul. \The Korea Sale Festa will also take place online and also for foreign tourists, exclusively.
