Police have arrested bar owners who tricked intoxicated customers from abroad into paying large sums of money. Some of the victims were found to have traces of a sedative called Zolpidem in their hair. Police are investigating whether the bar owners used drugs to commit their crimes.

Police arrested five people including the bar owner for overcharging foreign customers who were under the influence of alcohol at the time. Police have found that the perpetrators charged an American tourist 480,000 won for alcohol in June last year. But after returning to the U.S., the American tourist found that after he had passed out at the bar, a total of 16 million won were charged to his credit card in three installments. At a nearby bar, 7.9 million won were charged to a German tourist's credit card in just one hour. Moreover, his hair was found to contain a sedative called Zolpidem. Given that the foreign tourists passed out in a short period of time, police are zeroing in on the possibility that the bar owners used drugs to commit crimes.

[Soundbite] Kim Eon-jung(Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency) : "We believe that the use of drugs has something to do with the crimes. We're trying to find clear evidence that drugs were used."

Police are expanding the investigation, as many more foreign tourists may have fallen victim to similar crimes.
