The ROK-US Combined Forces Command is reportedly discussing whether to suspend the annual joint military drill during the Winter Olympic Games. The exercises which typically take place every March may be postponed in an attempt to observe the Olympic Truce Resolution for PyeongChang adopted at the UN General Assembly and to induce North Korea’s participation in the Games.

The South Korean government is reportedly pushing to suspend annual ROK-US military exercises slated to take place during the PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games next February and March. Multiple military officials said that the South Korean military is seriously considering an option to postpone the joint military drills for a month to after the Olympic Games are over. A key official of the presidential
office Cheong Wa Dae also said that the suspension of the ROK-US military exercises during the Olympics period is one of several options on the table. He also added that the drills are not going to be canceled all together, but its timing will be adjusted. Such discussion between South Korea and the U.S. is taking place in order to follow the Olympic Truce Resolution for PyeongChang. The truce resolution, which promotes suspension of all hostile acts during the PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Games, was adopted at the U.N. General Assembly on November 14th. The postponement of military exercises for the sake of the Olympic Games can be interpreted as a removal of tension on the Korean Peninsula ahead of the Olympics and a friendly message to induce North Korea to participate in the Games. However, the United States has redesignated North Korea as a terror sponsoring nation in recent days and announced a set of tougher independent sanctions against the regime. So South Korea's postponement plan depends on whether North Korea will launch military provocations within this year and whether the U.S. military will cooperate with the plan to suspend joint drills. The presidential office replied that there has been no discussion or decision yet about suspending the joint ROK-US military exercises.
