South Korea's military has vowed to strongly respond to obvious provocations from Japan. It immediately issued a denunciation and summoned a Japanese military attaché to lodge a formal complaint, over Japans continuous and provocative low-altitude flights its military planes. It appears that the strained bilateral ties will likely affect military cooperation, and a military information protection accord between the two countries.

A Japanese patrol plane's threateningly low-altitude flight was immediately reported to South Korean military leaders. Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo canceled a meeting with reporters and began discussions on how to deal with the matter. The Defense Ministry issued a strong protest within an hour. The ministry strongly denounced Japan's provocation and pledged to respond sternly if similar incidents occur in the future.

[Soundbite] Seo Wook(Joint Chiefs of Staff) : "With suspicion regarding Japan's intention, we strongly denounce its latest action."

The military summoned a Japanese military attaché to lodge a formal complaint. Some military officials were known to have insisted that self-defense measures should be included in the statement. It appears that the two countries' military cooperation will likely be reconsidered and postponed. Some skeptics even raise a question about the need to maintain a Seoul-Tokyo military agreement on military information security, which was signed in 2016. They say that it would be meaningless to share secret military intelligence when the two countries are unable to exchange information over a radar dispute.

[Soundbite] Moon Geun-sik(Korea Defense Forum) : "I think the military information security agreement has become meaningless and the two countries should re-discuss the pact if Japan continues to make provocations repeatedly."

Concerns are arising that under the current situation, Japan's repeated provocation could damage trilateral alliance with South Korea and the U.S. as well as defense cooperation with Seoul.
