The winter chill has gripped the country but Koreans take heart in a favorite seasonal snack. A recent survey shows that roasted sweet potatoes are number one in the winter. They are cheap, they are healthy and can be served in a wide variety of ways.

The ordered dish comes out and customers are busy taking photos. With black stripes against yellow, this pizza is fittingly called the "spider pizza." The golden topping is none other than sweet potato. The salty cheese and sweet potato are a perfect match, especially appealing to young customers. Roasted sweet potatoes are also popular. It's no longer sold only on the streets. Sweet potatoes are roasted even at convenience stores these days. One survey shows that roasted sweet potato is Koreans' number one favorite winter snack, beating the ubiquitous fish-shaped bun and the sweet pancake with sugar filling. The health effects of sweet potato is believed to be one reason for its popularity.

[Soundbite] Prof. Son Suk-mi(Catholic University of Korea) : "The resin called "jalapin" which oozes out when raw sweet potato is sliced helps to boost bowel movement and lower cholesterol levels."

With growing interest in its nutrients, even the leaves and stalks of sweet potatoes are being used. This noodle-like food seen in this stew at this restaurant are sweet potato stalks. It takes 6 long hours just to get the entangled stalks cleaned and prepared but customers love them. Sweet potato leaves aren't being discarded either. Bread containing sweet potato leaves has been newly introduced.

[Soundbite] Han Seon-gyeong(Rural Development Administration) : "Sweet potato leaves contain lutein, which is good for the eyes, and other beneficial substances. But the leaves are mostly thrown away during harvest.

In the impoverished past, Koreans survived on sweet potatoes. Now they are making a comeback, riding on the well- being health boom.
